Eviction Memory

The last strategy focuses on the experience of tenants who have been evicted from their homes. Since the Bronx Civil Housing Court is a two-minute (2) walk from the Bronx Museum of the Arts, we wanted to use the museum as one of the hubs where floater Community Health Workers would be located collecting the experiences of the families who were not able to stop the eviction process.

The main objective of this strategy is to promote awareness about the effects of evicting a tenant. This goal is particularly important during the spread of highly contagious disease because families without a home are more susceptible to such viruses. This effort would be composed of oral stories that narrate the experiences a tenant wants to share about their apartment or being evicted. The graphic below shows the proximity between the museum and the court.

Eviction Memory at Museum

The floor plan below shows the exhibition space on the second level of the Bronx Museum of the Arts. In it, we have located a typical unit found at the River Park Tower to scale. This plan shows how this particular unit would be positioned within the space. We chose this apartment because the "Death Towers” are the site of high evictions. We wanted to show the full scope of all four strategies using a single site.

The second image shows the highlighted unit within the exhibition space.

Eviction Memory at Bronx River Park Tower

In tandem, we wanted to have an extension of the installation at sites of high evictions. This effort would be at a much smaller scale with community members and passerbys interacting with it. We envision a marker or plaque that states a fact about eviction and how it is affecting the community. People who see it on a sidewalk or park can choose to interact with it however they want. They may write on it, paint or kick it. The main goal is to create a space where people can voice their opinions.
