Mapping Remotely
Due: 2/25/2022
What:
There are two options for this assignment. Please complete the tutorial relevant to the option you choose.
Option A - Mapping Change with Landsat Satellite Imagery
Create a map using Landsat Satellite imagery that shows land use change over time. Download two (or more!) images captured by the Landsat 8 satellite of the same location on different dates, import them into QGIS and symbolize with a false color composite that helps to highlight a change in the landscape that is visible in your chosen location.
Tutorial 5 covers the skills necessary to complete this assignment.
Requirements
Your final work must be a designed map composition (gifs are okay here too)
Your designed map composition must include:
- title
- legend
- scale bar
- north arrow (your map doesn't need to have north pointing vertically...)
- citations for all data sources (please use Chicago style or an equivalent)
- projection used
- your name
Option B - Satellite Grids
Taking inspiration from the work of artist Josh Begley and the animation In Plain Sight (description, and full video), use the Google Static Maps API to download satellite/aerial images for 20 - 100 significant locations of your choosing.
Design a layout to present the images on one or more slides (gifs okay here too).
Tutorial 6 covers the skills necessary to complete this assignment.
Requirements
Your final work must be a designed composition on one or more slides with a 16:9 aspect ratio (1920x1080 pixels).
The aerial images you will download are not georeferenced and do not have embedded geographic information, thus you should plan to design the layout of your final work outside of QGIS -- for those not familiar with Adobe Creative Suite a presentation software of your choosing (google slides, keynote etc) is a good option.
Your designed map composition must include:
- title
- appropriate auxiliary annotations to help the viewer understand the subject of your project
- your name
Submission
- Upload your map/layout:
- as a pdf or GIF to Canvas
- add it to the pin-up Mural Board for 2/25
